Running Queries in Discover Lite

When you build a visual, using the metadata trees, measures, and drop zones in Discover Lite, you are, in effect, building a query against your chosen database. By default, each time you change your visual, your query is changed and automatically executed (auto run). In some situations, however, this behavior is not preferred, in which case the auto run option can be disabled, switching Discover Lite into manual execution mode.

You may want to switch off Auto Run because you want to make several changes before the query executes or because the data source is slow and it's quicker to set up the selections in multiple steps before launching the query. You may make this choice for one specific visual (selecting or clearing the auto run option on the ribbon) or for all of your visuals (specified in your user defaults).

Note: Auto Run executes a query automatically every time the application detects a change that updates the query. This includes changes to drop zone selections, measures, calculations, and other query functions. This may also include slicer selections, although Pro users can also configure a separate Auto Run setting for their slicers. Any changes that do not require a query change, do not prompt auto run to execute. This includes formatting and most visualization changes, manual element tree selections, and checking or unchecking member elements.

Disabling Auto Run

By default, most users have their queries auto run and execute based on each change they make in the interface as they click, drag-and-drop, and so on. However, this setting can be changed in user defaults or (for one visual) from the overhead ribbon in Discover Lite.

Default Query Execution

If you want to change the default Query Execution behavior, open the user defaults pop-up and locate the Query Execution option under Discover:

  • To disable Auto Run, select Manual.
  • To enable Auto Run, select Auto.

Query Execution in a Visual

The Auto Run button is present on the ribbon in Discover Lite (orange arrow):

Note: This is a toggle option. When it is selected (as shown above), Auto Run is enabled for this visual. When the selection is cleared, Auto Run is disabled for this visual.

Manually running your query

If you choose to disable Auto Run, you can manually run your queries by clicking the main Pyramid button, Run Query, in the top left-hand corner or by pressing F2 on your keyboard.

When the query needs to be run, the "lightning bolt" alert appears.
